INSPECTORS
AWL is an approved charitable organisation under Section 34B of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979. The approval being granted by the Minister for NSW Primary Industries and Fisheries. That approval empowers Animal Welfare League NSW to enforce the POCTAA (Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979) and with that responsibility employs Inspectors. Inspectors employed by Animal Welfare League NSW carry an authority issued by the Minister and are sworn Special Constables in the state of NSW.
The Inspectorate is also responsible for the enforcement of animal welfare codes of practice, including the following:
- Welfare of Animals in Film and Theatrical Performances
- Companion Animal Transport Agencies
- Animals in Pet Shops
- Horses in Riding Centres and Boarding Stables
- Keeping and Trading Birds
- Dogs and Cats in Animal Boarding Establishments
- Breeding Dogs
- Breeding Cats
- Security Dogs
- Animals in Pet Grooming Establishments

The Version 1 Australian Standards for Export of Livestock (the Standards) have been amended to reflect stakeholder and public comments and changes recommended by the Livestock Export Standards Advisory Committee (LESAC). The new version of the Standards is known as Version 2 Australian Standards for the Export of Livestock (Version 2 Standards). The Version 2 Standards were endorsed by the Federal, State and Teriitory Agriculture Ministers.
