GENERAL INFORMATION
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can we adopt an animal?
All dogs are vaccinated, heartworm tested, desexed and microchipped. Cats are desexed, vaccinated and microchipped. All our animals come with a 21day health guarantee. We are also able to offer Lifetime Registration.
The League often has a range of breeds available. Some of our dogs and cats are available for viewing on our website. Click here to meet some of our friends, awaiting a loving new home. We advise that you come by and visit us before you are ready to adopt an animal so we can discuss your options in adopting the right companion pet for you.
What do I need to do if I have a companion animal that I can no longer keep?
You can surrender your animal to us at either of our Shelters or (at any of our) Branches. A donation will help with our veterinary costs. Please telephone the Shelters for opening hours and information.
We do our very best to rehome all animals surrendered to us.
We are considering adopting a second animal into our family. Can you suggest a breed and an age that would best suit our family?
We encourage you to visit one of our animal shelters with your companion pet and see if your pet responds to the other animals. Each individual circumstance will determine what breeds are best suited to your lifestyle. It is always a very good idea to bring any other pets you already have at home along with you, as well as the whole family so you can all meet on neutral territory. Please call West Hoxton Shelter on (02) 8777 3300 or Ingleside Shelter on (02) 9910 7000 for opening hours.
I am interested in a career working with animals. I was wondering if you use volunteers at your facilities. If so, could you please advise on minimum age requirements and the duties to be performed.
The minimum age for volunteers is 16 years of age. As a volunteer you would assist the staff cleaning, grooming and general care of companion animals. Please ensure you wear closed in shoes, long pants and clothes you do not mind getting dirty as well as tying long hair back. Our hours of operation are 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Please telephone the Shelters if you require any further information.
I have previously contacted Animal Welfare League NSW with regard to indicating in my Will that I wish my dogs and cats to be accepted into the Legacy Program in the event of my untimely death. I am now in the process of updating my Will and my solicitor has suggested that I make somebody from Animal Welfare League NSW the co-trustee of the Will. Could you please send to me the details of the appropriate person in your organisation so that I may contact them to discuss my Will.
We have a comprehensive brochure outlining options for making a bequest to the League, leaving a Legacy in your Will and associated legalities. To put your mind at rest, please contact our Legacy Officer on (02) 8777 4444 who will provide you with some detailed information on our Legacies and Bequest Program.
Is microchipping compulsory and what is lifetime registration?
Under the Companion Animals Act 1998, it is mandatory that all dogs and cats must be microchipped before being adopted, sold or given away. Animal Welfare League NSW offers a microchipping service through our Shelters.
Before lifetime registering your companion animal, your companion animal must be microchipped. If your companion animal has already been microchipped you will need to provide proof of the microchip number (this can be located on the certificate you received at the time your companion animal was microchipped). You must also provide proof of desexing if applicable. If applying for a pensioner discount a government pensioner card must be shown.
The once-off lifetime registration fees are:
Undesexed companion animal.........................................$150 Desexed companion animal..............................................$40 Desexed companion animal owned by a pensioner....$15 Recognised breeder.............................................................$40 Assistance Animal................................................................free
Remember that if you move house or locations, to contact the council in your new area to update your microchip information.
Does AWL NSW offer a microchipping lifetime registration facility?
Yes we do. Please contact our shelters to arrange an appointment to have your companion pet microchipped and/or lifetime registered.
